Agent readiness on BigCommerce

BigCommerce hosts your store and checkout, and lets you edit robots.txt, checkout options and your Stencil theme. Those three decide most of what an AI agent meets.

Checked against BigCommerce's documentation on October 26, 2026.

What the platform handles

  • Hosting and the checkout itself
  • A default robots.txt that keeps crawlers out of checkout and account pages
  • A sitemap at /xmlsitemap.php

What you control

  • robots.txt rules, in the control panel
  • Whether shoppers can check out as guests
  • Your Stencil theme, including its structured data
  • Apps and scripts added to the storefront

What to check

robots.txt

Check this

BigCommerce lets you edit robots.txt in the control panel's website settings, under Search Engine Robots; with Multi-Storefront each storefront has its own. The default blocks checkout and account pages, which is fine. Check nobody has added rules blocking AI assistants.

Headless storefronts

Check this

If your storefront is headless (for example built on Catalyst or another framework), check that product pages send their content in the HTML rather than building it with JavaScript in the browser.

llms.txt

Check this

We couldn't find a documented storefront setting for llms.txt. Ask BigCommerce support or your agency how to serve a file at /llms.txt; it's a small bonus, not a must-have.
