Agent readiness on Shopify

Shopify does a lot of agent readiness work for every store, and more with each release. Your theme, your apps and a handful of settings still decide whether an AI agent can read your products and get to checkout.

Checked against Shopify's documentation on October 26, 2026.

What the platform handles

  • A sitemap and a default robots.txt
  • Bot protection through Cloudflare, always on
  • An llms.txt and agents.md served by default
  • Hosting, speed and the checkout itself

What you control

  • Your theme: structured data, buttons, pop-ups, variant pickers
  • Your apps, and anything they add to or remove from pages
  • Settings such as sign-in before checkout and spam protection
  • Any CDN or bot product you add in front of Shopify

What to check

robots.txt

Usually fine

Shopify's default robots.txt lets AI agents in. You can change it with a robots.txt.liquid template in your theme, which Shopify calls an unsupported customization. Open /robots.txt on your store and check nobody has added rules blocking AI assistants such as ChatGPT-User or Claude-User.

Checkout

Check this

Shopify hosts checkout. The setting that matters is requiring sign-in before checkout: leave it off unless you truly need accounts, because agents can't create one for a shopper.

llms.txt

Usually fine

Shopify serves /llms.txt by default, mirroring its agents.md file. You can replace it with an llms.txt.liquid template; read what your store serves today before customizing it.
